»» With its 2,600 square kilometres (1600 sq miles), Tarangire is a different habitat to the other northern parks. It is 30 km across (18 miles), from east to west, and 100 km across (62 miles), from north to south. Considered a “park of giants”. Tarangire is home to huge baobab trees and large herds of elephants, as well as lions, leopards, antelopes, gazelles, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, and about five hundred species of birds, both resident and migrant, the highest concentration in Tanzania. The centre of life is the Tarangire River itself, which during the dry season, along with the Silale Marsh, becomes the only source of water, thus attracting large numbers of animals.

»» A can’t-miss destination on Tanzania’s star-studded Northern Safari Circuit, the Ngorongoro Crater offers a classic Big 5 safari experience in the unique setting of an ancient volcanic caldera. Home to some 30 000 animals, the crater’s surprisingly diverse habitats are revealed on an Ngorongoro safari on all-day guided game drives; the scenery is spectacular, predators are abundant and it’s not unusual to see the Big 5 in a single day.

- Located on the outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater lies Gibb’s Farm. The cottages at Gibb’s Farm each have a unique theme and are richly decorated with eucalyptus floors and handmade furniture. From Gibb’s Farm you can take a beautiful walk to a waterfall in the area and caves where elephants often come for their minerals. But you can also take a walk on the coffee plantation and see how the coffee is roasted. Unique is the African Spa with Maasai healings.

The Serengeti is renowned for hosting an annual migration comprising at least 2 million wildebeest, plains zebra and gazelle – the greatest spectacle of its type in Africa – but the immense plains are also home to unusually dense populations of lion, leopard, cheetah and other predators, while being possessed of a liberating sense of space best experienced on an early-morning balloon safari.
